Asbestos is a mineral that differs from others because of its crystals that form thin and long fibers. This mineral has soft and pliant properties, and asbestos can also withstand heat. Its deposits are found all over the world including Canada, Brazil, Zimbabwe, Russia and South Africa.
Asbestos became increasingly popular with manufacturers because of its tensile strength, ability to resist heat, absorb sound, and other properties. It is used to manufacture a number of materials such as mud and texture coats, vinyl floor tiles, sheeting, fireproofing, brake pads, fire blankets, thermal pipe insulations, etc. However, a number of studies have shown that asbestos can also be injurious to health if its fibers are openly spread in the air or if it is used in clothing. This fact has limited the use of asbestos in building materials, and there are now strict codes in place for using it in a safe manner.
